The Netherlands cricket team celebrated its recent victory over the United Arab Emirates, to qualify for next year’s T20 World Cup in Australia, with a rousing rendition of a slightly revised version of the Richmond theme song.

Former Western Australian and Australian one-day international wicket-keeper/batsman Ryan Campbell, who is the Netherlands coach, told SEN how the Dutch team came to adopt the famous Tigers theme song that was written by Jack Malcomson in the early 1960s.

“I’m a passionate Freo Dockers fan and I found it a bit hard to change those words into something for the Dutch. So we went with the good, old Richmond theme song,” Campbell said.

“The guys had a Dutch song that they sung and it was bloody horrible, to be honest.

“I sat down with them and said, look, this can’t keep going. We need to come up with something.

“One of the boys actually is a Richmond fan and he felt that if I gave him a bit of time he could put the words together that obviously would be more resident to the Dutch. And we came up with that.”
