Star Richmond key forward Jack Riewoldt has paid a glowing tribute to exciting, young Tiger small forward Daniel Rioli on the eve of the 2017 season.
Riewoldt, who was announced as Richmond’s co-vice captain for the new season last Friday, declared that Rioli had “been outstanding” throughout the pre-season, following his impressive debut year of AFL football in 2016, but insisted the Tigers were not placing excessive expectations on him.
“We don’t expect anything over the top from Daniel . . . we don’t expect him to be a world-beater, or anything like that,” Riewoldt said.
“But one thing I can say about him is I don’t think I’ve ever seen a kid try as hard as what he does.
“He’s as honest as the day’s long, he’s been super-impressive, and I know within the football club there’s a very high regard for him . . .
“I’m really looking forward to seeing how he grows up this season.
“He’s certainly got some talent there and, hopefully, he can show everyone what he’s got.”
Rioli, who turns 20 next month, played 18 games and kicked 13 goals in his debut season of league football with Richmond last year.
