For Bachar Houli, supporting Bendigo’s local Muslim community was high on the priority list when he joined his teammates for the Club’s Community Camp earlier this week.
Bachar joined the group for prayer and conversation over tea, urging community members to draw strength from his experiences and success as the first devout Muslim AFL player.
He spoke of a warm and caring Australia, that has embraced and supported him, highlighting a special connection with his team mates, coaches and the Richmond Football Club.
Bachar also spoke of the power of football, and sport in general, to bring communities together and urged parents to involve themselves and their children in local sporting clubs. He cited football as a great way to keep young people busy, out of trouble and mentally healthy, particularly during times of unease.
President of the Bendigo Islamic Society Sameer Syed thanked Bachar for visiting the community, acknowledging it was a privileged to have such a role model support them and their endeavours.
