As the side prepares for their first away game of the season against Port Adelaide, midfielder Jack Ross hones home on the importance of having a winning mindset.

Fresh off completing a 41-point comeback win against Carlton in Round 1, the 24-year-old credited the side's historic victory to the team's ability to stand tall in the big moments.

“We just want to be in the fight,” Ross said.

“We know that our contest work is good enough and Carlton is a great contest team.

“That was the main thing, making sure that our effort and intent didn’t waiver and we got rewarded.”

Despite taking a 13-point win over the Blues, Ross admitted that there is still room for improvement.

“We sat down, had a look and there was a lot of growth, but there were a lot of areas that we can improve,” he said.

“There was a whole lot of improvement from the Collingwood game in the pre-season and the West Coast game.

“So that shows that we are really executing the system and being coached really well.”

Ross put on a dominant performance at the MCG last Thursday night, finishing with 28 disposals, seven clearances, four tackles and two goals.

The inside midfielder gave praise to the team, acknowledging the work of debutant Sam Lalor, who finished with 18 disposals and two goals, earning him the Round 1 AFL Rising Star nomination.

“I think Sammy Lalor gifted me both my goals and probably most of my touches, so I was lucky to get on the end of it,” Ross said.

"It was on the back of everyone else’s good work and positioning, so I've got to thank them.”

Ross spoke about the significance of the Round 1 win, but has quickly shifted his focus as the side prepares for their first away game of the season against the Power on Saturday.

“We really want to be mindful, to enjoy the win and celebrate it. But now it’s on to the next challenge, which is Port Adelaide in a foreign environment,” he said.

“We don’t want to rest on our laurels and let that win be the talking point of the year for us; we want to go out there and win every week.

"That is our mindset.

“We don’t want to go there and make it an arm wrestle; we want to go there and make it really competitive.”
