Treaty for Victoria is progressing into the next significant phase, with enrolments opening today, Friday, May 10 to vote in the election to set up the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria.

Under a partnership announced last month, Richmond and the Korin Gamadji Institute are supporting Victoria’s Aboriginal communities and the Victorian Treaty Advancement Commission on the journey to Treaties in Victoria.

The Club will also use the powerful platform of this year’s Dreamtime at the ‘G game to raise awareness of Treaty to both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities.

All Richmond teams competing during Sir Doug Nicholls Round will proudly wear Richmond’s Indigenous-inspired guernsey, designed by Richmond’s, Daniel Rioli and his parents. The jumper also features the Treaty for Victoria logo.

The upcoming election in the Treaty process will help  determine the makeup of the new First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria. All candidates must be Traditional Owners of Country in Victoria.

The Assembly will be the voice for Victorian Aboriginal communities as the Treaties process continues and will negotiate a Treaty framework with the Victorian Government.

Victorian Treaty Advancement Commissioner, Jill Gallagher encouraged all eligible Victorian Aboriginal people to enrol and vote in the election which will help make Treaties happen.

“My message to the Aboriginal people is to get engaged with the process, it’s our time,” she said.
