Morris - the son of dual Richmond premiership player Kevin Morris - has had an instant impact at Tigerland, with his fierce attack on the ball and ability to shut down opposition small forwards.
The 23-year-old has missed only one game so far this season, through injury, and is averaging 15 disposals per game.
He has managed 20 or more disposals three times in his 12 games for the Tigers, against Collingwood, Port Adelaide and St Kilda.
“Steve’s story is one of perseverance, and he is one of the most driven individuals we have on our playing list,” said Richmond’s General Manager of Football, Craig Cameron.
“We were really keen to get him to the Club, and since the day he has arrived, he has been totally focused on upholding the values of the team.
“Having played consistent senior football in the SANFL, he has been able to make an instant impact at AFL level this season.”
Morris arrived at Richmond via a trade with GWS late last year, following an eye-catching season with SANFL club West Adelaide. He won West Adelaide’s Best and Fairest and also earned selection in the competition’s Team of the Year.
He averaged more than 18 disposals per game for West Adelaide, earning plaudits for his fierce attack on the ball, commitment to the contest, and ability to break the lines with his foot speed - attributes that he’s carried through to his debut season at Richmond.
Morris had previously played in the TAC Cup competition for the Western Jets, but was overlooked in the National Draft back then after training with several AFL clubs.
