Richmond coach Adem Yze will record a significant milestone on Sunday, as he reaches 300 games as a player/coach in the AFL.
When Yze leads the Tigers against the Fremantle Dockers in Round 5 of the 2025 season, it will be the 29th time he has coached an AFL side.
All of those senior coaching appearances have come with Richmond, apart from one game in 2022, when Yze stepped in to coach Melbourne against Hawthorn in Round 7, as Simon Goodwin was unavailable due to Covid-19 protocols.
Yze’s coaching career has followed a 271-game playing journey which spanned from 1995-2008 with the Demons.
He was one of Melbourne’s most dangerous and consistent performers, booting 234 goals, making the 2002 All-Australian Team, and winning the 2001 Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott Trophy, awarded to the Demons’ Best and Fairest.
As fate would have it, Yze has had several links to the Tigers throughout his football life.
It all starts with Yze’s hometown of Shepparton, which is where Richmond “Immortal” Tommy Hafey was a successful coach before landing the Tigers’ coaching position at the end of the 1965 season.
Hafey coached Shepparton to a premiership hat-trick from 1963-65.
Yze’s first coach at Melbourne was another Richmond great in Neil Balme, and his playing debut came against the Tigers in Round 13, 1995. The Demons defeated Richmond by 11 points in that contest, with Yze amassing six disposals.
The next week, Yze would kick the first goal of his career against the Dockers – the same club he reaches the 300-game milestone against on Sunday.
The last game of Yze’s playing career came in Round 22 of the 2008 season, against the Tigers, of course. Richmond would win that day by 80 points, with Yze collecting 25 disposals, the second-most for the Demons.
Yze will look to celebrate in style and lead the Tigers to victory against Fremantle on Sunday at Barossa Park, as part of the AFL’s Gather Round. The bounce is at 12:35pm AEST, and fans can watch via Fox Footy and Kayo Sports.
