Richmond VFL coach Jake Batchelor provides a summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in last Sunday's Round 1 win over Coburg at Holm Park Recreation Reserve.
Tyler Sonsie (34 disposals, 20 contested possessions, 10 clearances, five inside-50's, one goal)
“Strong performance around center bounce, 16 ground ball gets and 20 contested possessions. Stayed around the ball really strongly, was clean below his feet, brought his teammates into the game and was a real leader in our midfield.”
Kane McAuliffe (29 disposals, six marks, five tackles, five clearances, eight inside-50's, one goal)
“Similar to (Tyler) Sonsie, just played above the level, was strong, stepped through tackles, drove his legs, brought his teammates into the game as well. Great performance, and impact on the scoreboard.”
Tom McCarthy (24 disposals, three marks, three clearances, five inside-50's)
“First half as an inside mid, great run for us, got back to support really well, moved into half back in the second half where his run and drive was a big factor in our ability to win the game.”
Lachlan Wilson (22 disposals, 10 contested possessions, five clearances, eight inside-50's)
“Played as the inside mid for us, really balances out the other midfielders around us, great defensive mindset, a lot of good clearance numbers, eight inside-50’s shows he's got a really good balance between defense and attack.”
Austin Johnson (20 disposals, four marks, four inside-50's, three rebound-50's, two goals)
“Just ran hard all day on the wing. Makes great decisions by foot, and just lives to the moment, kicks two important goals for us when we needed them.”
Mutaz El Nour (20 disposals, three inside-50's, six rebound-50's)
“Strong game, worked hard on defensive system throughout the week and has improved that, looking to see him keep progressing through the year.”
Nick Collier (20 disposals, four marks, four inside-50's)
“Great game, moved him to half back three weeks ago, and he's picked it up really strongly. His run and drive has been great to see. Handball receives and keeping up with our attack but also his defensive contest and pressure on intent is really strong.”
Liam George (19 disposals, four marks, 10 contested possessions)
“Played the wing the whole game, and played his role running up and down the train tracks and turned the ball over for us really well, got inside-50 and got back to defend and it was a good game from him.”
Massimo Raso (19 disposals, two goals, two clearances)
“First half as a forward, impacted really well with the first goal of the game, great to see him get his first game in our colors. Second half we needed a bit of speed in the midfield to help us, and he provided that in spades. Great versatility for a first gamer.”
Sam Toner (12 disposals, three marks, two inside-50's)
“Multiple shots on goal, didn't quite maximize his opportunities, but got to the right spots. He's a real classy player and runs really hard both ways for us.”
Joel Garner (11 disposals, three marks, five tackles, four inside-50's, three rebound-50's, one goal)
“Great to have his leadership back in the backline and his real physical nature. I think it set the tone for the rest of the team to play a really aggressive defensive game.”
Jacob Koschitzke (11 disposals, three marks, two rebound-50's)
“He's a good general down back, didn't get outmarked or lose an aerial contest. Really strong defensive system, Coburg challenged us with how well they spread the ground and had some tough decisions for Jacob, but made some really strong decisions and had a great final quarter, and particularly in the air, had some big moments.”
Samson Ryan (11 disposals, five marks, 12 hit-outs, three goals)
“Bit of ruck, bit of forward, great energy, great leadership. Great teammate, kicked goals for us, competed well in the air and had some critical moments in the final 10 or so minutes.”
Campbell Gray (10 disposals, three marks, five rebound-50's)
“A tale of two halves. Second half he came out and made really strong decisions in the air to spoil as opposed to trying to mark everything. Played our system right and for a third game as a defender, it's going really strongly.”
Harry Scott (10 disposals, three inside-50's, two tackles)
“Played on the wing. For an inside player, made some really good decisions around staying out and helped our defensive system. Great to add flexibility to his role.”
Jasper Alger (10 disposals, six contested possessions, three clearances, one goal)
“Had some real opportunities to tear the game apart. Probably didn't, some of the marks didn't stick, but he's learning, he's getting to the right spots, and we see a great future for Jasper.”
Jhett Haeata (10 disposals, four marks, one tackle)
“Played first half as a back, run and drive, and still learning our system, but bringing some strengths. Changed the angles really well with the ball in hand, used his speed and his flair and set up a couple of goals for us, particularly in that second half.”
Oliver Hayes-Brown (nine disposals, two marks, 13 hit-outs, three clearances)
“Got some really good ruck minutes, a bit of work to do on craft, but great to see him out there working in tandem with Mate (Colina).”
Jonty Faull (eight disposals, three marks, six contested possessions, five inside-50's)
“Great to see him out there for three quarters of football essentially, crash packs, runs really hard, and just wants to compete and win. Great to see him out there.”
Mohammed Yassine (eight disposals, six contested possessions, three tackles)
“Amazing pressure, amazing GPS numbers, just runs his backside off. Get him to slow down sometimes and just hold his position in contests and at front and centers and he'll be even more damaging for us.”
Nick Guiney (eight disposals, five contested possessions, two tackles)
“Great game, really good system player, six intercept possessions. Works really well with his teammates, makes strong decisions on defense, and he's really calm and composed with the ball in hand.”
Thomas Sims (eight disposals, five marks, five contested possessions, two goals)
“Once again had some real opportunities to take the game really strongly, dropped a couple of marks, but he put himself in positions really well. Great learning game for him, but all in all, great progression.”
Mate Colina (five disposals, one mark, five hit-outs)
“Bit of forward, bit of ruck. Similar to (Oliver), I think there's a chance to use their size a bit more to our benefit going forward. Took a nice contested mark in the last quarter to have a shot at goal. Didn't quite make it, but he's continually learning to put himself in the right positions.”
