RICHMOND forward Shane Edwards will take his striking charge to the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday in a bid to play in Saturday night's MCG clash with Essendon.

Edwards was charged with a level three striking offence following a clash with Liam Sumner from Greater Western Sydney at Skoda Stadium on Sunday.

Based on video evidence and a medical report from the Giants, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), medium impact (two points) and high contact (two points).

This is a total of six activation points, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction. He has an existing six-year good record, reducing the penalty by 25 per cent to 168.75 points and a one-match sanction.

There is no real downside for Edwards to contest the charge at the tribunal because even if the charge is sustained, he misses just one week and will be available to play the following week in Richmond's first final in 12 years.
