Basics reap rewards for Tigers
Richmond midfielder Reece Conca believes a reliance on following team process was the most important aspect of Sunday’s 121-point victory over Greater Western Sydney at Skoda Stadium.
After a slow start, the Tigers kicked 14 unanswered goals to have the game well in their keeping by half-time.
“They started off really strong. They’re a young, exciting, talented group, and we knew they’d come out hard,” Conca told Roar Vision after the match.
“That first quarter we missed a few opportunities. We went away from a few structure and game plan things.
“In the second quarter, we bounced back and built a pretty handy lead, which we carried through.”
Coach Damien Hardwick’s message was simple at half-time, with the Tigers holding a commanding 80-point advantage. “We just wanted to keep the ball rolling, and not lay off on what we were doing well in the first half,” Conca said.
“I think we did that, but we had a few lapses. They got us in contested possession through the midfield in that third quarter, so we wanted to bounce back in the last and finish strong.”
Conca was one of a number of Richmond players who contributed to the win, with the 50-gamer collecting 28 disposals and kicking three goals.
“Our midfielders popped up and kicked some really good goals, and Aaron Edwards came in and kicked five,” he said.
“It helps from a team perspective being able to share the load, which is important leading into finals.”
