‘Roar Vision’ caught up with mature-age Richmond recruit Adam Marcon on the Club’s pre-season training camp at Palm Cove. Here’s how he’s tracking early days with the Tigers . . .
Reaping the rewards
“I’m getting a lot out of it (the camp) . . . It’s really challenging, but at the same time really rewarding. It’s great at night to sit in bed and know what you’ve accomplished throughout the day, and also look forward to what’s to come . . .”
Look, listen and learn
“I’m just trying to soak up as much information as I can . . . what the coaches are telling me, what my teammates are telling me, and also what I can see. There are obviously some great players around, so I’m just trying to observe them and pick up some little tips along the way . . . I’m in a room with Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin and Kane (Lambert) . . . It’s been great to have a little bit more time with the leaders of the Club, and to get to know everyone.”
Come a long way
“It’s a bit bizarre at times . . . you have to pinch yourself and recognise where you actually are. We’re up in Cairns doing this camp and a couple of weeks ago I was just at home and looking forward to some other challenges in my life . . . It’s been great.”
Seizing the opportunity
“We were talking last night in the team meeting about the difference between maybe a top 10 or top 15 draft pick, and someone who’s come into the system a little bit more mature through the rookie draft. I’m definitely aware of how hard it’s going to be, and I also know the journey of how hard it was to get here. It’s not something that I’m just going to let up easily. I’m definitely going to give it my best. I want to be here for a long time, but the reality is that if you don’t put in the hard work, you won’t be.
Following in Kane Lambert’s footsteps
“Kane’s been really fantastic. Obviously, we’ve played at a lot of different footy clubs together and done a lot of our training together. It was fantastic to see what he accomplished last year, and I think that gave Richmond a bit of faith that I could come in and, hopefully, do something similar.”
Sound advice
“The main piece of advice that he gave me was that people are always willing to help those who are looking to help themselves. Going and talking to coaches, getting to know people, building relationships, and showing everyone that I want to improve, and that’ll get people to jump on-board and help me as much as possible. That’s been the main theme that he’s instilled in me . . .”
Top Tiger influences
“I’ve been lucky enough to spend a fair bit of time around Trent Cotchin so far . . . just watching him, but also talking to him and understanding what he’s learnt. Blokes like Steve Morris are really great for things like Club culture. There are obviously a lot of different personalities and a lot of different character types . . . You learn different things off different people, which is great.”
Striving hard for improvement
“At the moment my focus is on improving my fitness, improving my knowledge of the game plan, and improving my flexibility of roles. I want to be able to be able to come in and play a different number of positions, and help out the team in any way that they need me to. So, that’s my sole focus at the moment, and I’m working every day to improve those things.”
