Richmond VFL coach Steve Morris provides a summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in last Friday night's Round 4 match against Carlton at Ikon Park.
Garrett McDonagh (29 disposals, seven marks, seven inside-50s, five tackles, two goals)
"It was a new position for him, he played across half-forward and through the midfield, and I thought he was a standout on the day. His ball use was outstanding, both around goals but also bringing his teammates into the game. I thought it was a really good start for him in a different position."
Lachlan Street (21 disposals, eight marks, three clearances)
"A combative game from him. It was a tough battle given the dominance from the Carlton rucks. But, I thought our midfielders really worked their way into the game and it was a big improvement on the week before after having the challenge raised to them."
Mutaz El Nour (21 disposals, six rebound-50s, three marks)
"His best game for the Club by a long way. He's having a really good season and he displays some fantastic attributes that we think will hold him in good stead in his career moving forward. He was good in the air but equally good at ground level."
Thomson Dow (20 disposals, five marks, four clearances)
"I thought he had a solid game without standing out. He was one of very few experienced players out on the grand from an AFL point of view, and I thought he approached the game with a fantastic attitude. He was a part of a midfield that was really able to respond from last week."
Cam Olden (20 disposals, nine clearances, six tackles, one goal)
"Cam's game was absolutely outstanding. He led the team with six tackles and he tagged Carlton's Paddy Dow in the second half and kept him to one clearance for the entire second half, whilst helping himself to nine for the game. It was a big tick for Cam in his first full game as a midfielder for us."
Sam Banks (18 disposals, six marks, three inside-50s)
"I thought he had a really good game which could have been made even better with a couple of last-quarter shots on goal, which didn't hit the mark. But, I thought his work-rate on the wings was really good and he's in pretty good form."
Austin Johnson (17 disposals, six marks, three rebound-50s)
"He was solid. He's been in really good form for us this season and he's a really vital part of the way we play. He's flexible and we know he can go back, which he did with effect on Friday night."
James Trezise (16 disposals, four marks, one goal)
"He's a super exciting player. He showed his versatility when he helped us out in the ruck in the second half after having lost Tom Brindley to illness. The X-Factor that he has was on show in and around the footy, and he kicked a beautiful goal from long range in the first quarter."
Max Clohesy (16 disposals, nine contested possessions, three clearances)
"Had an outstanding game. I thought his attack on the footy was first class and his hands at ground level were outstanding. He's starting to play the sort of footy that we know he's capable of. He's a really exciting player in the making."
Jacob Bauer (15 disposals, eight rebound-50s, six marks)
"Had another really good game down back. I thought his aerial power was a real highlight for us, there were a couple of big contests where he didn't take a backwards step on. I think he's going to be a really important part of our backline moving forward."
Tom Bracher (15 disposals, four marks, three rebound-50s)
"I was really pleased with his game. He made some really good decisions with ball in hand and he just looked really classy out there. It's nice to see him putting together somer really good footy."
Billy Cooper (15 disposals, two marks, two rebound-50s)
"Was a late in with the withdrawal of Angus Hicks and he had an outstanding game across half-back, with the move of Garrett McDonagh forward. I thought his intensity was second to none out there and he played the game like it meant something to him. We were really pleased with his output."
Tom Brindley (14 disposals, four marks, three clearances)
"He was going really well until he had to leave the field with illness early in the third quarter. We loved his attack on the footy, we've seen his aerial power over the last few weeks but he's growing into a confident VFL player and he's an important player for us."
Ben Bilston-McGillen (14 disposals, five marks, one goal)
"Showed what he's capable of doing. I'd love to see him show a little bit more composure with the ball in hand, but he certainly knows how to win it and it was nice to see him have a really big fan club at the game supporting him. He's a young player with untapped potential."
Luke Teal (13 disposals, five rebound-60s, four marks)
"A solid member of our back seven or eight who were absolutely outstanding on the night. We kept Carlton to 23 scoring shots from 66 inside-50s which is a great result, and he was a really big part of that."
Joel Nathan (12 disposals, four marks, four rebound-50s)
"We know what Joel is going to give each and every week, and that's effort and intensity. I thought he lacked a little bit polish at times but he certainly gave us a really good contest when we threw him forward late in the game and he played a valuable role for us."
Will Bravo (12 disposals, four inside-50s, three clearances)
"An up and game down for Will, but I thought he did some fantastic things and it's exciting to see him back on the field after injury. He's taken some really good steps forward in his journey at VFL level."
Misilifi Faimalo (11 disposals, four tackles, four rebound-50s)
"He had the job of nullifying the opposition's small forwards and he did a reasonable job of this, showing some really outstanding individual pieces of play."
Steely Green (nine disposals, two marks, one goal)
"It was fantastic to see Steely kick his first goal in Richmond colours and his teammates get around him to celebrate in style. I thought he looked energetic up in the forward line and his pressure was reasonably good. He will continue to gain a better understanding of what's required of him as a small forward."
Fraser Elliot (eight disposals, three tackles)
"He was okay without standing out. He's a player that shot onto the scene last year and as a result, we probably have higher expectations of him that he hasn't quite met just yet this season. But, he's a really classy player with ball in hand and we saw that a number of times on the weekend."
Lachlan Johnson (six disposals, thee inside-50s, one goal)
"We love his defensive pressure. He certainly has invested in the way we want to play at Richmond and that's great to see, but we need to start seeing a little bit more of an offensive output from him as well."
Archie May (six disposals, four marks, one goal)
"Whilst his numbers aren't huge, for a young player to come in and debut and have such an impact on the game, I thought was really pleasing. He could have easily finished with three or four goals had it not been for a couple of missed opportunities. He'll be better for the experience."
Lewis Hill (five disposals, two marks)
"Played his first game for the Club. He's one of James Tezise's best mates, and it was nice to see Lewis give the ball to James to kick a long-range goal in the first quarter. There's no doubt that he'll be better for the experience, having only just started to gain an understanding of our structures and the way we play. He's a classy player that has a good future at this level."
