The dictionary defines the word steely as determined, firm, dogged, persevering, resolute, purposeful, tenacious, undaunted, steadfast, unwavering, unflinching, unbending, unshakable.
Richmond’s second selection (No. 55 overall) in the 2022 AFL national draft, Steely Green, was given that unusual first name by his mother, a huge fan of popular, long-time American rock band Steely Dan.
But given the type of footballer he has become, it’s as if his mother possessed clairvoyant-like powers along with her Steely Dan fandom.
The 18-year-old from WAFL club South Fremantle, is steely by name and steely by nature with his football, thriving on the physical side of the game.
“I love getting my hands dirty and pushing in and under. The idea of hitting bodies is what I love the most,” Green said.
“I love getting knocked around, I love tackling, I love the rougher, contested side of footy, I think it’s everything.”
Green, 179cm and 74kg, is a player in the mould of dual premiership Tiger Liam Baker, in several ways.
Like Baker, he’s a West Australian, like Baker, he’s small for a footballer, like Baker, he’s versatile, capable of playing a variety of roles, and like Baker, he plays without fear despite his lack of size on-field.
Hopefully, like Baker, he will enjoy plenty of success at Tigerland. Given his steely attitude, he’s sure to leave no stone unturned to prove himself at the game’s highest level.
