Jumping Jack’s flash
Jack Riewoldt has become the youngest player to kick 10 goals or more in an AFL match since 1999, and the youngest Tiger to achieve the feat since 1979.
Riewoldt produced an outstanding 10-goal display against West Coast at the MCG last Sunday, at the age of 21 years and 225 days.
You have to go all the way back to Round 3 of the 1999 season to find a younger player to reach the coveted 10-goal milestone in the competition. On that day, Essendon’s Matthew Lloyd, aged 20 years and 359 days, booted 13 goals against the Sydney Swans.
And, you have to wind the clock back a further 20 years to discover a younger Richmond player to chalk up double-figure goals in a match. Michael Roach, at 20 years and 299 days of age, booted 10 goals, for the first time in his league career, against St Kilda in Round 18, 1979.
‘Roachy’ would go on to “top the 10” a further four times in the then VFL competition - three of them being in the 1980 season, where he won the Coleman Medal, with 112 goals, as the Tigers swept all before them on the path to the premiership.
Riewoldt, who has been in sizzling form over the past five matches, scoring 30 goals, now leads the Coleman Medal after 12 rounds of the season, with 45 goals.
He is just the 10th player in Richmond’s history to notch 10 goals or more in a game.
