Roger Dean, who will become a Richmond ‘Immortal’ at the Club’s Hall of Fame function on March 15, has provided a fascinating insight into the fierce determination he possessed throughout his league football playing career, striving to help the Tigers succeed.

Although he was involved in just 17 victories during his first 85 senior games with Richmond, Dean’s strong winning mindset never wavered at any stage.

“No matter what game it was, I always wanted to win . . . and I always thought we were going to win, even early (in his career at Tigerland),” Dean said on SEN’s ‘KB and the Doc’ program.

“It was very hard because sometimes when the game finished a lot of them (teammates) were talking about where they were going that night and they were laughing. And I thought, we just lost. It really hurt me to see people just enjoying themselves when we’ve just lost. I couldn’t understand it.

“If we were 10 goals behind, I still wanted to try and kick it to goal . . . didn’t want to ever give up. I always just wanted to try and play well for Richmond . . .

“I never, ever thought I couldn’t win.

“It’s so negative if you don’t think you can win. There’s something wrong with you, I think.”
