The raw statistical numbers may not necessarily indicate it, but Richmond premiership forward Jacob Townsend was a valuable contributor in last Saturday’s victory over Collingwood at the MCG.
Townsend, promoted for his first game at senior level since Round 9, had 11 disposals, five score involvements, two goal assists, took four marks, applied one tackle and kicked a goal.
But it was the intense heat he put on opponents, the blocks to help teammates and his overall strong physical presence, that would have particularly pleased coach the Richmond coaching group.
It was about this time last year that Townsend found his way into the Tigers’ senior line-up after performing so consistently throughout the season in the VFL – and we all know the incredible impact he subsequently had, kicking 16 goals in the last five games.
While ‘Towner’ may not hit the scoreboard to that extent at the business end of this season, he remains an important role player in Richmond’s 2018 premiership quest.
