Tyler Sonsie made an impressive senior debut for Richmond in last Saturday’s clash with North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium.
The 19-year-old midfielder from NAB League team Eastern Ranges, who was the Tigers’ third pick (No. 28 overall) in last year’s AFL national draft, had 19 disposals, four inside-50s, four clearances, five score involvements and 379 metres gained.
He moved smoothly across the turf throughout the match and showcased his first-rate, two-sided kicking skills, setting up a number of scoring opportunities for teammates.
Sonsie gained senior selection with Richmond on the back of strong form at VFL level, and he had no problems making the transition to AFL ranks.
That performance in his first game underlined the considerable talent Sonsie possesses, and why the Tiger Army has plenty to look forward to with him, along with many other young players on the Club’s list.
Sonsie was Richmond’s 12th AFL debutant since its 2020 premiership triumph. The other players to debut with the Tigers in that time have been (in alphabetical order) Judson Clarke, Riley Collier-Dawkins, Noah Cumberland, Josh Gibcus, Rhyan Mansell, Will Martyn, Ben Miller, Bigoa Nyuon, Hugo Ralphsmith, Maurice Rioli Jr and Samson Ryan.
