You could mount a strong argument that Daniel Rioli, who is in career-best form this season, produced the finest performance throughout his time at Tigerland against West Coast at the MCG today.
Rioli, in his new rebounding role across half-back, was outstanding across the four quarters.
The triple premiership Tiger finished the match with a team-high 28 disposals, five inside-50s, four rebound-50s, three clearances, four intercepts, one goal, two goal assists, an equal team-high nine score involvements, a game-high six bounces and 565 metres gained.
He generated enormous drive for Richmond with his zippy run-and-carry and went at a highly-impressive 85.7 percent disposal efficiency.
His superb running goal at the Punt Road end of the ground sent the Tiger Army into raptures, and he nearly scored another one in similar style.
This season, Rioli is averaging 20.6 disposals, 5.1 marks, 2.5 inside-50s, 3.3 rebound-50s, 5.1 intercepts, 4.5 score involvements and 400.5 metres gained.
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick, during his post-match press conference, provided an insight into Rioli’s rejuvenation as a small defender.
“He’s pretty dynamic and he’s had a really good year from our point of view,” Hardwick said.
“You look at the more damaging half-backs, he would certainly be one of those . . . high metres gained.
“What he’s really really improved is defensively.
“His intent in and around the contest is good and it’s an area that he continually works on . . .
“We’ve been really pleased with his development, and I’m sure he has as well.”
