Kelvin Moore will be Richmond’s Homecoming Hero at Thursday night’s clash with Port Adelaide at the MCG.
The Tigers are set to pay tribute to Moore in the lead-up to the Round 13 match.
Moore will walk to the Punt Road end of the ground, where he’ll be greeted by the Tiger Army.
He’ll kick a ceremonial goal, then sign the football and present it to a Richmond fan in the crowd.
Highlights of Moore’s playing career with the Tigers also will be shown on the MCG’s big screens.
Kel Moore was recruited by Richmond from Healesville/Yarra Valley Old Boys via the 2003 AFL rookie draft (pick three overall).
The young key defender made his senior debut with the Tigers in Round 11 of the 2004 season against North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium.
Injuries restricted Moore to just 24 senior games during his first four years, but in 2008 he established himself as an integral member of Richmond’s line-up.
Moore played all 22 games that season and was rewarded for his impressive level of consistency across the Tigers’ backline with a fifth-place finish in the Jack Dyer Medal.
A 17-mark performance against Port Adelaide at Football Park in Round 13, followed by an AFL career-high 24 disposals a couple of weeks later v West Coast at Subiaco, highlighted just how valuable an asset Moore had become to Richmond’s defence, with his capacity to play on either significantly taller or smaller forward opponents.
In 2009, Moore was elevated to the Club’s playing leadership group, and he continued to showcase his athletic ability, toughness and discipline throughout that season.
With 19 games to his credit in ’09 and a further 19 the next year, Moore was tracking well, maintaining a high level of performance and seemingly over the injury woes that had plagued him early on at Tigerland.
Unfortunately, however, in 2011 he was struck down with a severe hip complaint that wrecked his entire season.
After numerous operations on his hip, Moore made a bold playing comeback late in the 2012 season but managed only three further games at senior level before being forced into a premature retirement at just 28 years of age. He subsequently assumed the match-day role of Richmond’s runner.
Although Moore was cruelly denied the opportunity to carve out a lengthy playing career at Tigerland, he left a lasting legacy through his resilience, courage and commitment to the Yellow and Black cause.
