Dustin Martin is one of the most decorated Richmond players in decades . . . a Brownlow Medallist, two-time All-Australian representative, dual Jack Dyer Medallist, Norm Smith Medallist, AFL Coaches’ Association Player of the Year award winner, Yiooken award winner, Ian Stewart Medallist.
His 2017 season was widely regarded as right up there as the best ever produced by an individual player in the history of AFL/VFL football.
And, while Martin understandably hasn’t quite reached those lofty heights so far this year, he’s still been extremely good.
He is averaging 24.9 disposals, 5.5 inside-50s and 5.2 clearances per game, has kicked a total of 24 goals, and is ranked No. 1 in the competition for score involvements, No. 2 for centre clearances and No. 3 for inside-50s.
But Martin’s awesome achievements and strong statistical numbers are merely an entrée for what truly satisfies his football appetite, according to Tigers coach, Damien Hardwick.
“He just loves winning. The thing I love about Dustin Martin is, irrespective of his performance, he just loves to win,” Hardwick said.
“He’s one of the best players in the competition, one of the best players the game’s ever seen, and for him, it is all about winning.
“It’s amazing, really, for a guy that has got that much ability to not worry so much about his kicks, marks and handballs.
“It’s a real progression of him as a player. And it’s why he’s one of the Richmond greats.”
