Richmond coach Damien Hardwick was pleased with some exciting signs that skilful, speedy small forward Daniel Rioli showed in his debut league game for the Tigers in their Round 1 win against Carlton.
Although the 18-year-old had only seven disposals, he managed to have an impact at times throughout the match due to his pace and the defensive pressure he applied inside Richmond’s forward half.
“He started off well and should have finished with two (goals),” Hardwick said.
“He did some good things . . . some terrific tackling. I think he had six tackles, 50-odd pressure points.
“Possession-rate, once again, will improve.
“He started to get a bit tired, and got a ‘corky’ halfway through the third (quarter).
“I thought it was an okay game.
“He’ll certainly build on it. Every game he’s played he’s got better and better.
“We’d like it if he’d hit the scoreboard a little bit more, but he’s got some upside, there’s no doubt.
“He’s incredibly quick . . . keen to learn also.”
