Chris Newman has given his seal of approval to the new-look Richmond playing leadership group.

Newman, who stood down as the Tigers’ captain at the end of the 2012 season, after four years in the role, believes his successor, Trent Cotchin, will do a fine job.

“He’s already shown that he’s got a lot of leadership qualities that are going to be really important for us,” Newman said on SEN.

“I’m looking forward to getting behind him and running out on the ‘G, Round 1 (against Carlton).”

Newman also backed the appointment of new leadership group members, Ivan Maric and Dylan Grimes.

“I was rapt for those two guys,” he said.

“Ivan’s one of those guys who leads with his big presence out on the field.
“Obviously, he had an outstanding season last season, he was in the leadership group at Adelaide, and he possesses a lot of those qualities that fit the bill to be in the leadership group.

“Dylan Grimes, he’s a great kid . . . does everything right.  Obviously, he hasn’t played a lot of games, but we feel like he’s going to be a really important part of our team going forward.

“So, I’m rapt for him and looking forward to what he can do in the leadership group.”
