Last season might have been a quiet one by the lofty standards of triple Richmond premiership star key forward and three-time Coleman Medal winner Jack Riewoldt, but 2021 promises to be another prolific campaign.
A five-goal haul in the Tigers’ 86-point victory over St Kilda at Marvel Stadium last Thursday night added to four-goal outings against Carlton in Round 1 and Hawthorn in Round 2, as well as an under-rated three-goal performance against Port Adelaide last week.
Taylor Walker's resurgence at Adelaide might have stolen the headlines so far this year when it comes to goalkicking veterans, but the 32-year-old Riewoldt now has 17 majors in five weeks.
That makes it Riewoldt’s best start to a season after five rounds in his entire AFL playing career. His previous best return, five rounds into a season, was 16 in 2013.
Riewoldt is emerging as a genuine contender for yet another Coleman Medal.
Could he become just the ninth player in AFL/VFL history to claim the competition’s goalkicking award for the fourth time? On his current form, don't rule it out.
Along with the five goals he scored against the Saints in Round 5, Riewoldt also had four inside-50s, an equal game-high 10 score involvements, 443 metres gained, and he took eight marks (seven of them inside 50).
