With the countdown to bouncedown season 2012 on in earnest, Tony Greenberg is spending the next couple of weeks examining the burning questions on the lips of the Yellow and Black faithful.  Here is his look at the second burning question for 2012 . . .

How many of the Tigers’ 2011 draftees can have an impact this season?

From the time Richmond Recruiting Manager Francis Jackson read out Brandon Ellis’ name, as the Club’s first pick at the 2011 National Draft, the expectation has been that the tough, disciplined 18-year-old from the Calder Cannons would likely slot straight into the Tiger team in 2012.  Two and a half months later, nothing’s changed on that front, Ellis continuing to impress the Tigers with his character, professional attitude, single-minded determination, composure and skills set.  Clearly, He is giving himself the best possible chance of running out with the side on March 29 for the season-opener against Carlton.

It was anticipated that Todd Elton, the Club’s second pick in the 2011 National Draft, would take a fair bit longer to develop, given his lanky frame (197cm and 92kg), but  he’s been somewhat of a surprise packet in the pre-season to date.  He’s adapted really well to the rigorous training regime, has clunked a few big marks under practice match conditions, and shown the athleticism he was renowned for at TAC Cup level with the Dandenong Stingrays, delighting the Tiger coaches in the process.

Matthew Arnot, being the ultra-competitive young man that he is, has not taken a backward step in any of Richmond’s pre-season work.  The ex-Oakleigh Charger has thrived taking on Tigerland’s toughest in his fearless quest to win the contested footy and he looks quite a likely type - very much a player in the Damien Hardwick mould.

The Club’s pre-season draft pick, 18-year-old forward from the Dandenong Stingrays, Brett O’Hanlon, is more of a long-term, project player, but he has also had his eye-catching moments, showing the capacity to take a strong grab, read the play well, provide a contest, and finish off with good kicking skills.

The next burning question will appear tomorrow.
