Richmond will now host Collingwood at the Swinburne Centre on Sunday, February 14 at 3.10pm as part of the updated Round 3 AFLW fixture announced this evening.
The contest, to be broadcast live on Channel 7 and FOX FOOTY, will be the first meeting between the two traditional Melbourne clubs in the AFL Women's competition.
The Tigers have started the 2021 season with losses to foundation sides Brisbane and Melbourne, while the Magpies are undefeated from their two encounters against Carlton and Geelong.
The clash, Richmond’s first home game following the AFLW’s league-wide Pride Round, will be presented by the Club’s partner Midsumma.
Midsumma hosts Victoria’s premier LGBTQIA+ arts and cultural festival in summer each year and provides year-round support to artists and culture-makers from its communities.
Richmond has been a proud partner of Midsumma since November 2017, highlighting the Club’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Throughout this week leading into Sunday’s Midsumma dedicated fixture, Richmond will educate members, fans, and staff by telling the stories of people at the Club and honouring Queer identities in football.
Richmond AFLW defender Harriet Cordner, who is in a same-sex relationship, said she was proud to be playing in a Midsumma dedicated game this weekend.
“I think it is a really important thing moving forward for society and footy and just for the general public to see us doing these sorts of things,” she said.
“People seem to look up to footy in Australia (because) it is such a respected and historic game and a key part of our culture. So, I think the more that football can show that it’s getting behind Queer communities, the more people can jump on board.”
Key defender Phoebe Monahan added that football, particularly the AFLW, had become a safe place for all.
“I think that’s mainly because the competition is new, and it is what we have made it and what we want it to be, (which is) a safe place for everyone.”
“It’s not thought twice about when we come into the Club by anyone around the football club (including) players, coaches, or staff. It is just who we are and how we are accepted.”
