Trent Cotchin has moved into equal-second position on the list for most premierships as a club captain in AFL/VFL history.
Richmond’s 2020 Grand Final triumph over Geelong was Cotchin’s third as the team’s skipper, placing him alongside another couple of the competition’s more-recent, inspirational on-field leaders in Michael Voss (Brisbane) and Luke Hodge (Hawthorn). Allan La Fontaine (Melbourne) and John Nicholls (Carlton) also captained their teams to three premierships.
There are only three players who have captained their clubs to more premierships in the 124-year history of the competition – Syd Coventry (Collingwood), Dick Reynolds (Essendon) and Michael Tuck (Hawthorn). Each of them is a four-time premiership captain.
The list of most premierships as an AFL/VFL club captain is:
4 – Syd Coventry, Collingwood, 1927-1930.
4 – Dick Reynolds, Essendon, 1942, 1946, 1949-1950.
4 – Michael Tuck, Hawthorn, 1986, 1988-1989, 1991.
3 – Allan La Fontaine, Melbourne, 1939-1941.
3 – John Nicholls, Carlton, 1968, 1970, 1972.
3 – Michael Voss, Brisbane, 2001-2003.
3 – Luke Hodge, Hawthorn, 2013-2015.
3 – Trent Cotchin, Richmond, 2017, 2019-2020.
