A quarter-by-quarter analysis of Richmond’s 2020 season reveals the overall evenness that led to the Tigers’ premiership triumph.
Richmond outscored its opposition in 49 out of a total of 84 quarters from 21 games throughout the shortened season, but there was only a difference of two wins from the best-performed to worst-performed quarters.
First and third terms were the Tigers’ best for the season, with 13 wins and a draw apiece, followed by last quarters, 12 wins, and then second quarters, 11 wins and a draw.
The team’s ability to turn around its slow starts during the early rounds of the season proved to be an important factor.
When the season resumed following a nearly three-month lay-off because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Richmond lost its first three opening quarters, against Collingwood, Hawthorn and St Kilda, and managed only a drawn result from the clash with the Magpies throughout that time.
