With Dustin Martin having secured a fourth All-Australian blazer last night, to go with a myriad of other honours in his wonderful AFL career, where does he rank among Richmond’s all-time playing greats?
Club senior advisor, esteemed football administrator and former Tiger star player, Neil Balme, believes Dusty fits comfortably in the truly elite bracket of those who have worn the famous Yellow and Black colours throughout history.
“It’s always difficult (to compare), but he’s as good as any of them in my view,” Balme said on the Club’s podcast Talking Tigers.
“He makes something out of nothing, he’s exciting.
“He’s a wonderful player, there’s no doubt.
“He would fit in with the greats of any era, at any club, in my book . . .
“When you kind of know him, he’s understated . . . but, clearly, he understands how important it is to play well, when it’s important to play well.
“He’s got that lovely belief in himself, which he doesn’t talk about all that much, but you can see that he really drives himself very hard.
“He’s got that lovely balance of wanting to be part of the team but understanding where he fits in it.”
