Key Richmond defender David Astbury flew under the radar in his return from a long-term injury against Adelaide at Adelaide Oval last Saturday.
While teammate Shane Edwards, understandably, attracted plenty of attention for his fine first-up game since Round 5, Astbury’s comeback also was noteworthy.
Astbury, who had been sidelined since Richmond’s Round 4 loss to St Kilda at Marvel Stadium on June 27, because of a damaged cartilage behind his kneecap, underlined why he’s such an important member of the team in the 44-point victory over the Crows.
He shored up the Tigers’ defence through his clever reading of the play, good body positioning and strong marking.
The 29-year-old, dual premiership Tiger had 14 disposals, six marks and a game-high nine intercepts.
With his height, experience and football nous, Astbury will be a valuable contributor for Richmond in its 2020 finals campaign.
