I know for most people, our traditional rivals are Collingwood and Carlton. However in my family, perhaps the biggest rival is Sydney. Both my dad and my boyfriend are big Sydney supporters and each year we head off to the match, smack-talking and taunting each other in a (mostly) friendly manner. Last year I had to work and missed our come from behind win against Sydney late in the season, so I was keen to make up for it this match. However, after previously losing to the Swans in Sydney this year, and with Sydney trying to secure a home final, my pre-game smack talk was a little lack lustre. I admit I wasn’t 100% sure we could win this one.

Once I got to the ‘G and took in the atmosphere, my attitude began to lift. I went down to the family day which was being held for the fans and soaked in all the excitement of the proud group that are the Tiger Army. Even though we had lost quite a few in a row, the turn out was amazing.

My excitement built as I took my seat next to my very confident boyfriend and dad and saw our boys run out, led by Trent Cotchin. Cotchin is such a natural leader and this shows by the way he plays on field, stepping up his game when needed and spurring the other players on.

I was pleased with Bachar Houli’s effort as well, getting 30+ touches and generally causing havoc for the Sydney players. Jayden Post was good in the backline, showing improvement every week. I think playing him back has been a great decision from Dimma and the team, he’s a strong mark and is good at getting his fist to the ball in many contests. Matt Dea had a good game, he’s an exciting newer player who I look forward to seeing develop over the coming seasons. Robin Nahas’s three goals were also a highlight of the game.

This game was so good to watch. Partly because I enjoyed teasing my boyfriend and dad and partly because this is the biggest win we have had against Sydney in 21 years! It’s strange to think that back in May 1990 when we beat Sydney by 79 points, I would have been just two months old. Perhaps my parents were watching the game, holding me and saying that I would follow whoever wins. I’m certainly glad it turned out the way it did.

Next weeks game is against Melbourne. Melbourne are a team that have often troubled us in the past and although haven’t been in the best form of late, they will certainly come in with confidence that they can win. If we can use the ball effectively and convert, I know we can mount a strong challenge and make it two from two.

As always, Go Tigers.
