Three more young players are set to make their AFL debuts with Richmond.
David Astbury, Matt Dea and Troy Taylor have been named in a squad of 25 for Sunday’s Round 4 match against Melbourne at the MCG, and will take their place in the finalised line-up.
They join Dustin Martin, Ben Nason and Relton Roberts as first-year league players to debut with the Tigers in just four rounds of the 2010 season.
Astbury is a 19-year-old, 195cm, 86kg athletic, tall forward, taken at pick 35 by Richmond in the 2009 AFL National Draft and recruited from Tatyoon/North Ballarat Rebels. He was a member of the Tiger team beaten by Hawthorn in the NAB Cup opener at Launceston’s Aurora Stadium in February and showed some promising signs in that game. His marking and kicking ability are highly rated.
Dea is an 18-year-old, 186cm, 83kg, athletic rebounding defender, taken at pick 44 in the ’09 National Draft and recruited from Ballarat Clarendon College/North Ballarat Rebels. He was a late convert to Australian Football from basketball and played just three games with North Ballarat Rebels in the TAC Cup last year. A tremendous leap, clean hands and pace are features of his game.
Taylor is an 18-year-old, 189m, 77kg, exciting Indigenous medium forward, taken at pick 51 in the ’09 National Draft and recruited from South Alice Springs (NT). He was impressive in his performances for the Northern Territory at last year’s National under-18 championships, capturing the attention of the league talent scouts with his tremendous athletic ability to jump at the ball and mark from all angles, as well as win contested possessions in tight situations through his clever ball-handling.
