Matthew Richardson has been cleared of any significant damage to his hamstring after undergoing scans yesterday.

Richardson suffered tightness in his hamstring and lower back while playing Richmond’s VFL affiliate Coburg last Saturday, in his first game since Round 6 this season.

Despite being cleared of hamstring damage, the Club will take a cautious approach and not risk him for the remainder of the 2009 season.

Richardson was due to undergo minor knee surgery in the post-season, but this surgery will now be brought forward to fast-track his return to full fitness.

The Tiger champion of 282 games and 800 goals is looking forward to working his way back to peak condition.

“I did a lot of hard work to make it back for the last few rounds of the season, but unfortunately it hasn’t worked out the way I planned,” he said.

“I thought it was sensible to sit out the rest of the season and get myself fit again. I think it was a sign that I needed to take more time.”
