Richmond has landed the first player under the AFL’s new free agency system, securing the services of talented forward/midfielder Chris Knights from Adelaide.

Knights, originally from Victoria, has spent the past eight seasons with the Crows, and qualified for the league’s inaugural free agency period as an unrestricted free agent.

“We’re delighted to have gained Chris’ services, as we believe he’ll be a valuable acquisition for our group,” said Richmond’s General Manager of Football, Craig Cameron.

“Chris has the all-round talent, versatility, and experience to really help us, and we feel that he’ll thrive with the opportunities at Tigerland.”

After being drafted to Adelaide from the Eastern Ranges at the end of 2004, Knights made his AFL debut in 2005.  He has played a total of 96 games and kicked 68 goals.

Knights enjoyed his best season of league football to date in 2009, when he kicked 43 goals from 20 games and averaged 18 disposals per match.

The 26-year-old cited a fresh opportunity at Richmond as his reason for leaving the Crows.

“The last week has been quite nerve racking, but to finally get pen to paper and join this fantastic club is an honour,” Knights said.

“I spent eight years with the Adelaide Football Club, which has been fantastic to me.  Your career is a short one, and you just have to make the most of it, and Richmond gave me that opportunity, so I’m just delighted to be here.”
