Cousins '100 per cent' for Saints
Richmond assistant coach Danny Daly says retiring veteran Ben Cousins will leave nothing in the tank in his last two AFL games
There had been some concerns that Cousins might not recover from the corked thigh he suffered in last week's loss to Carlton.
Richmond assistant coach Danny Daly said the veteran was a certainty to take his place against St Kilda on Saturday.
"For a guy who is 32 years of age, they do get niggles every week after playing 100 minutes of footy in the intensity we play at," Daly said on Thursday morning.
"He copped that corkie last week which a couple of TV stations thought was a broken leg. He's sore, like everyone else around this time of year but he’ll be 100 per cent by the time he runs out."
Daly said Cousins would leave nothing in his tank in his last two weeks, and had requested to start on the field rather than his usual role off the bench to get maximum game time.
"In that way I think you'll see the best of Benny in the next couple of weeks. His form over the last six weeks has been terrific so hopefully he can carry that out in the last two games," Daly said.
The Tigers have toyed with the idea of using Mitch Morton, Ben Nason and Robbie Nahas in the midfield post-Cousins. Daly said Nason in particular was a chance to benefit from the vacancy left by the former Eagle.
“We thought it was a good opportunity to get him in the midfield, give him a taste of it then give him a big pre-season. He’s one of the candidates to fill the role for Ben next year,” he said.
Trent Cotchin returns from a four-match suspension this week and will go straight in to the midfield, while football purists will be eagerly anticipating the showdown of the two Riewoldts - Jack and Nick - playing at either end of the ground.
Daly joked that there was half a chance Jack Riewoldt could play a defensive job on his older cousin.
“Hopefully the other Riewoldt doesn’t play,” he said.
“We might even throw Jack back on Nick for a stage if he’s not finding any form. They’re pretty close the two of them, I think they’ve had a few chats over the past couple of weeks. Jack’s had an outstanding season this year and obviously Nick is running back into some ominous form before the finals.
“Justin Leppitsch in about round one suggested Jack would make a good defender. That lasted about two minutes so no thoughts of that at all.”
