In the countdown to bouncedown season 2011, Tony Greenberg continues his examination on richmondf.com.au of the burning questions on the lips of the Yellow and Black faithful.  Today he ponders . . .

Is Alex Rance the real deal?

In 2011, Alex Rance went from being a fringe player to one of the first selected in the Richmond side.  He developed into a crucial member of the Tiger defence, inspiring teammates with his courage and fierce attack on the footy.

Not only did Rance consistently nullify the opposition’s best key forwards, he relished the chance to run off them and initiate attacking moves for the Tigers.  He also earned a big tick for his composure and decision-making.  Rance was rewarded for his efforts with a new two-year contract and received due acknowledgement from the Club’s coaches, winning the Most Improved Player award on Jack Dyer Medal night 2011.

Given that he is only 22, it’s fair to assume there’s still scope for improvement in Rance’s game.  Averaging just over 18 possessions per game in his 19 appearances at the game’s highest level in season 2011, while, at the same time, curbing the competition’s finest forwards, would have provided Rance’s confidence levels with a decent boost.

He appears set to build on the impressive gains he made last year and inject vital steel into the Richmond backline.
