Distractions aside
The club’s official online statement claims that both parties mutually agreed to go their separate ways after Connors failed to meet not only the clubs standard
Richmond’s General Manager of Football Craig Cameron clearly explained that Connors sacking was not the result of any isolated incident. Connors had been given quite a few chances and this incident was the tip of the iceberg. Since both parties mutually agreed to cut ties, we can only assume that from Connors own admission he knew he let the club down.
Richmond is drawing criticism for supposedly being lenient on Dustin Martins’ punishment in relations to the events that have transpired the last few days, however, I don’t think they were lenient at all. Martin was suspended for two matches and expressed great regret for his actions. What else are you meant to do to a 21-year-old kid that hasn’t faulted the club before? In both Martin and Connors’ cases the punishments have met the crimes. Both guys had been given their warnings and they knew that bad actions equal bad consequences. Daniel Connors and the Richmond Football Club both knew the terms of their relationship going forward and unfortunately Connors breached their agreement. It’s a sad conclusion but hardly unfair.
Maybe now that this chapter in Connors life has closed, he can reflect on what opportunity has been lost. Sometimes only through true failure and real regret can a person significantly make a change. I think I speak for everyone involved with the Richmond Football Club when I wish Daniel the best in his future endeavors. He’s an extremely talented individual and through hard work he will have another chance in football.
Hopefully Dustin Martin can learn from this. The future of the Richmond Football Club has a major role for him if he wants it. This Saturday shapes as our season defining match. Let’s hope we can defeat Melbourne - even if firings, suspensions and injuries are causing major distractions.
