Hardwick rejects video review
Damien Hardwick has weighed into the video review controversy, saying the use of a third umpire isn't necessary
RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has weighed into the third-umpire controversy by saying that video adjudication is not necessary.
Hardwick made the comment in response to the two video-review incidents during Collingwood's one-point victory over Essendon in Wednesday's Anzac Day clash.
"Just let the goal umpires do their job," Hardwick said.
"I reckon [the video review system] has caused more conjecture than it's been worth."
The first review came after Collingwood's Tyson Goldsack poked the ball over the goalline while being chased by Dustin Fletcher.
There was doubt in the goal umpire's mind over whether the ball had hit the post or Fletcher's boot or neither.
Deliberations lasted around a minute before being deemed inconclusive. The lesser score — a behind — was therefore awarded.
The second incident came in the dying moments of the game when Essendon was in front by five points.
Collingwood forward Jarryd Blair bundled the ball over the line from the goalsquare, but the goal umpire was unsure whether the ball had come off his knee or boot.
The review showed the ball had come off his boot. On this occasion a goal was awarded, putting the Magpies ahead by a point, which was the final margin.
Hardwick said the system is confusing.
"The goal umpire and the boundary umpire are there to make the decision," he said.
"Let them make the decision. Don't let it go to a third umpire.
"For mine it's not necessary."
