Wet weather blues
The Tigers have hit some stunning form of late and have taken it up to some of the best teams in the competition.
The reason we have been playing so well is because of the possession style game we are playing, holding possession through short passes and really getting that run and spread in the stoppages.
This really isn’t shocking news for anyone who considers themselves a die hard fan.
However, the last couple of weeks have exposed what stage our development level is at. We have worked on our structures and improved the work rate of every player across the board, so much so that it’s actually hard to find a player that hasn’t improved.
The structures support that possession style game and unfortunately wet weather makes for scrappy conditions making it hard to stick to that style of play, Though the game style is slightly modified in the wet it’s still very difficult to adapt, but here are the positives. The work rate of our boys has not dropped off. They are working as hard as ever to better themselves and the team. It may not be so obvious but you only have to watch the stoppages in the last two games to see the work rate off the ball.
Contested possessions are still up on our opponents and we are the number 1 possession side in the competition. Our wet weather abilities will improve as the boys get better we are still developing and the next couple of seasons are going to be very exciting.
With the bye this week we have a chance to rest before taking on Adelaide at AAMI stadium, which will be a massive test for our boys Adelaide are another team in some great form.
With some good weather though, we will be more than competitive playing similar free flowing styles.
Our biggest advantage will be around stoppages with the likes of Trent Cochin in Brownlow contention (some would suggest, including me). It has been said that we have one of the midfields in the comp and for the most part this is where the game will be won and lost. Our stats indicate that we can win the contested ball and maintain possession. Our run out of defence will prove a major advantage, those of you that watch after the bounce will know that we have somewhat of a record for a coast to coast goal which took only 13 seconds from the kick in.
The bye should set us up for the second half of the season giving the boys a chance to rest and reload for an easier draw. That being said I reckon we should make the finals and I know the boys will be going hard to try and make it happen.
