The Steven Morris story is one of determination and perseverance.

Overlooked as a teenager in the AFL’s National Draft four years ago, Morris was rewarded with a spot on Richmond’s senior list on the opening day of the 2011 trade period.

The 22-year-old son of dual Richmond premiership player Kevin Morris trained with the Tigers last month and was thrilled to get the nod after the Club completed a deal with Greater Western Sydney.

“When I walked into Richmond Footy Club, and saw dad’s name on the number 38 locker, it made it a goal of mine to play here,” Morris said.

“Deep down, it’s always been a real ambition of mine to play at the top level, and to do it at Richmond makes it more special.

“When I was 18, for a few reasons, it passed me by a bit.  I had a knee reconstruction and my goals changed a little.

“But I’m absolutely rapt to finally achieve my dream, firstly playing AFL footy, and to able to do that at Richmond, where dad played and won premierships, is awesome.”

Morris starred for West Adelaide in the SANFL competition in 2011, winning selection in the league’s Team of the Year.

He averaged more than 18 disposals per game and earned plaudits for his fierce attack on the ball, commitment to the contest, and ability to break the lines with his foot speed.

“I just wanted to keep working hard and improve,” he said.

“I still had that goal to play at the next level, but at the same time I just wanted to play good footy and get back to enjoying it.”

The Morris playing career so far has featured roles as a forward, midfielder, run-with player, defensive stopper and running half-back.

He will join his new Tiger team-mates for the start of pre-season training later this month.
