He wanted to establish himself in the Richmond team and he wanted play a role to the best of his ability, whether it be on a wing, at half-back or as an inside midfielder.
"That's one of the things I aimed for at the start of the year - to play my role and I've been able to do that," he said after Richmond's 26-point victory over the Brisbane Lions at the MCG.
The main feature of Grigg's season has been consistency. Against the Lions, he had 15 kicks, 10 handballs and seven tackles, the equal highest number of tackles in the team with Robin Nahas.
His figures have read just about the same for every game this season.
"I've just wanted to play my role," he said. "If I do that, I'll stay in the team."
After concentrating on winning the ball for three quarters against the Lions, Grigg had the job of trying to quell the rampant Simon Black in the last quarter. It was a big task, considering Black's blue-chip effort in the third quarter.
"He's a fantastic player," Grigg said. "I just ran with him. I followed him. I harassed him. I did everything I could to stop him getting the ball."
Grigg restricted Black to just a few possessions in the final quarter. Then he set his sights on the next challenge, against Fremantle at the MCG next weekend.
