Happy birthday to us
Richmond Football Club is celebrating its 127th birthday today.
The Club was formed at a public meeting on February 20, 1885 at the Royal Hotel, directly opposite Punt Road Oval, and entered the premier football competition in the State back then - the Victorian Football Association.
Those early years in the VFA were fairly lean, however, by the turn of the new century, Richmond had become a force to be reckoned with.
The Tigers finished third in 1900, runners-up in 1901, and captured their inaugural premiership in 1902. They followed up with a second VFA premiership in 1905.
Then, in late 1907, Richmond, on the back of its playing strength, financial stability, central location, and large, passionate supporter base, was invited to join the breakaway VFL competition.
Richmond made its VFL debut in 1908 and, more than a century on, has earned a reputation as one of the most successful clubs in the competition, with many of the true greats of the game having pulled on the famous Yellow and Black guernsey over the years.
