Dual Richmond premiership defender Nathan Broad has taken his game to another level in 2020, and Tiger great Matthew Richardson is suitably impressed with what he’s seen from the 27-year-old so far this season. Here is what ‘Richo’ had to say about ‘Broady’ on the latest episode of the Club’s podcast ‘Talking Tigers’ . . .
“He’s in really good form. Again on the weekend (v Sydney at the Gabba), he was outstanding.
“I guess you’d look at what Broady’s been over the years and just go reliable and plays his role down back. But I think he’s become a lot more than that in 2020. He’s playing a pretty complete game in that back half now.
“Firstly, I think he’s so versatile . . . I feel confident playing him on a ‘small’, as much as I would putting him on a ‘tall’ if you need be. The versatility is one of the things Dimma would rely on week to week.
“And reliability. I think you know what you’re going to get down there with him each week. He doesn’t get beaten very often at all.
“He’s very defensively sound, but I reckon this year he’s winning the ball back even more than he ever has, particularly in the air. You remember that game a few weeks ago, he took some really telling marks in the back 50.
“He’s got great running ability, which allows him to get to plenty of contests, but it also allows him to get over and get on to the loose ball in the back 50.
“That running ability is one of the things he’s always had. But because of that running ability, I think it’s given him even more chance now.
“As he’s become more experienced, he’s become a bit more offensive. I reckon he’s using his running ability and his speed to create a little bit offensively.
“His efficiency by foot is another factor . . . That’s what you want out of your back half. You turn the ball over exiting back 50 and you’re in all sorts of trouble.
“And the last thing I’d say about Broady . . . I only watch him from afar, and I’ve met him a little bit around the footy club, but he just seems to be a great character and adds so much, I guess, to the culture of the footy club.”
