A permanent move to the midfield in 2013 has brought out the best in Richmond rising star Brandon Ellis.
The 20-year-old completed his AFL apprenticeship as a running defender in 2012, but some increased responsibility as an outside midfielder this season has seen his game rise to another level.
“I’ve been pretty happy with my form. I’ve stepped up into the midfield this year, whereas I played back last year,” Ellis told RSN radio.
“It comes down the coaches. They believe in me, and they’re really confident in what I can give to the team.

“I’m loving my footy at the moment. I just can’t wait for the next four weeks, and hopefully we can play finals.”
Ellis has missed just two games in 2013, his second season in the AFL, after playing 21 matches in his debut season.
This year, he has lifted his disposal average to 17, including six games of 20 possessions or more, and a season-high 39 against Melbourne in Round 8.
“I’ve had to work really hard. I’m still learning the game plan to this day. When the coaches tell you to stay on the outside and hold your width, it’s a lot easier to get the ball, especially when the inside mids are winning it,” he said.
Ellis was a key player in last weekend’s win over Hawthorn, winning 25 disposals, including 19 uncontested possessions.
The Tigers notched their 12th win of the season against the Hawks, however Ellis believes the side quickly shifted its focus to a difficult challenge against the Brisbane Lions this Saturday.
“We know we’ve got a tough opponent in Brisbane this week. They’ve been up and down, but they’ve shown they can beat the best sides,” he said.
“We believe if we stick to our game plan and listen to the coaches’ instructions on game day, we’re going to be pretty hard to beat.”
