Promising Tiger ‘tall’, David Astbury, is set to resume playing after being sidelined since early March with a foot injury.
Astbury will line up for Coburg in its VFL Round 2 match against Williamstown on Saturday.
“It’s tracking really well . . . I’ll probably play about 70 minutes – approximately three quarters – and then, from there, I’ll be playing up to 100%, so it’ll be good,” Astbury said on this week’s Musashi Medical Update.
The 22-year-old had been tracking well during the pre-season, until suffering the setback with his foot.
“I had a really good pre-season, got 95% of the pre-season under my belt, and then played two NAB Cup games,” he said.
“Then, after the game in Wangaratta (against Essendon), I had a stress reaction in my left foot.
“It didn’t quite fracture, but it was on the verge of doing that.
“We got it pretty early, so we probably stopped a 10-week injury, and cut it to 4-5 (weeks).”
Astbury, however, was extremely disappointed to miss the opening round blockbuster against Carlton after all the hard work he’d put in over the pre-season.
“I was quite upset at the time,” he said.
“There’s a lot of hype around Round 1 and I’d been building my pre-season towards that.
“I spoke to the assistant coaches, and Damien (Hardwick), and they said I was well and truly in the selection frame.
“So, it was definitely disappointing, but I suppose there’s still another 20 home-and-away games to go this year and, hopefully, I find myself getting plenty of senior footy under my belt.”
Astbury, who made his senior league debut with Richmond in 2010, has played 24 games.
He sustained a serious knee injury midway through 2011, which kept him out of the Richmond line-up until late last season.
In further good news on the Tigerland injury front, star midfielder, Nathan Foley, is poised to make his return to the playing field on Sunday week, with Coburg, after being out of action since the middle of last year with a ruptured Achilles.
