Versatility is becoming a valuable weapon in Richmond’s armoury . . .
The Tigers have a number of players who can successfully hold down a variety of on-field roles, as further evidenced in last Saturday’s 38-point victory over Adelaide at the MCG.
Not only can the likes of gun midfielders Trent Cotchin, Brett Deledio and Dustin Martin be damaging forward and back, but the team’s defenders are also becoming more flexible, with full-back Alex Rance a classic case in point.
Rance played on Adelaide tall forwards, Shaun McKernan, Josh Jenkins and Tom Lynch, as well as star midfielder Patrick Dangerfield, when the Crows threw him forward, and was a strong contributor for the Tigers, earning praise post-match from coach Damien Hardwick in his press conference.
“I think where good sides really stand up is the versatility across the field,” Rance said.
“It’s not just myself, but ‘Chappy’ (Troy Chaplin) played on a lot of blokes as well, and ‘Morro’ (Steven Morris) was playing on Lynch (Tom) at times, and he’s a taller player.
“So, it’s a good sign when you can throw a few blokes around.”
