Richmond established a Club record with its attendance figure at last Saturday’s blockbuster against Collingwood at the MCG.
The crowd of 81,950 meant it was the second time this season the Tigers had attracted 80,000-plus to a game – something they had never before achieved in the home-and-away rounds of any year in their history.
On single occasions in 11 previous years, Richmond had played in front of 80,000-plus crowds, but this season the Club has managed to do it twice already, inside just four rounds.
Richmond drew 80,971 to its opening round clash with Carlton at the MCG, before bettering that figure last Saturday.
The crowd for the match against the Magpies was just 16 short of the biggest at a Richmond v Collingwood fixture since the 1980 Grand Final. A total of 81,966 attended the Round 19, 1983 encounter at the ‘G’ between the traditional rivals, which was Tiger ‘Immortal’ Kevin Bartlett’s 400th game.
With the ‘Dreamtime’ match against Essendon looming in Round 9, the Tigers could well record a third 80,000-plus crowd figure in the first half of the 2013 season.
