Richmond officially launched its 2014 season last Friday night in the Plaza Ballroom of the Regent Theatre.
In front of 260 invited guests, including Fighting Tiger Fund contributors, sponsors and coteries, senior coach Damien Hardwick and the 2014 team, the Club celebrated the start of season 2014.
In a Great Gatsby themed event, from the era of the Roaring 20’s – a successful period for the Tigers - guests were entertained by two aerial acts, a 1920’s inspired performance, and heard from new Richmond President Peggy O’Neal, Hardwick and Richmond captain, Trent Cotchin.
During her address to the room, O’Neal reflected on the great progress of the Club over recent years and told players and guests to embrace both on and off the field challenges that lay ahead.
“In 2010 – just four short years ago – our membership stood at 42,000. We had debt approaching $5 million and a football team that was struggling to compete,” O’Neal said.“It is a stark reminder of how far we have come as a football club and equally, how hard we have had to work to get there.
“We must continue to work exceptionally hard and keep lifting the bar on and off the field if we are to continue to thrive in the extremely competitive environment that is AFL football. That is not negotiable.”
During the evening, former Richmond greats Kevin Bartlett, Roger Dean, Michael Roach, Michael Green and Barry Richardson helped the Club to celebrate ‘the sash’, assisting with the presentation of the 2014 playing list.
