Developing Richmond tall forward Liam McBean is enjoying his licence to roam further up the ground, after being dissatisfied with his quieter games since his return from finger surgery.
McBean wanted to have an impact when he wasn’t hitting the scoreboard, and Richmond VFL coach Tim Clarke encouraged the 19-year-old to win the ball outside of the forward 50.
“I spoke to Clarkey a couple of weeks ago about getting up the ground a bit,” he said.
“I was a bit frustrated being left at full forward and couldn’t really get into the game, so it was good to get up the ground and play as a higher forward, work overtime and get my hands on the footy more.”
After presenting well and providing multiple score assists in recent weeks, McBean shone with five goals in the VFL Tigers emphatic 35-point win over Casey on Saturday.
Two came from set shots, another two were cleverly dribbled through, and the last from a well-executed snap at a stoppage.
McBean, who has outstanding mobility for his 202-centimetre frame, wants to make the most of his size by improving his contested marking.
“I think the focus for me is to become more of a marking forward, more of a power forward,” he said.
“I was a rover growing up so that’s always been part of what I can do. I’ve got to start clunking them a bit more and taking some big pack marks.”
McBean gave credit for his standout performance to the Tigers’ impressive VFL forward line. He combined and communicated well with fellow goalkickers Sam Lloyd, Aaron Edwards and Ben Griffiths, to set up the side’s fourth win of the season.
“It was awesome playing forward (on Saturday). We all spaced out well and recognised mismatches. We really worked hard for each other, so it’s good that we all got on the scoreboard.”
