The fairytale story of Anthony Miles’ rise to prominence within the Richmond playing group this season, is about to become even more remarkable.
After just a dozen games for the Tigers, Miles is preparing to play the first final of his AFL career, in next Sunday’s ‘cut-throat’ semi against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval.
The 22-year-old has been a revelation at Tigerland in 2014, after being delisted by rival league club Greater Western Sydney at the end of last season.
He has provided Richmond’s midfield with a major boost through his great determination toughness and ball-winning ability.
In his 12 senior appearances with Richmond, Miles is averaging 24.4 disposals per match and he has a highly-impressive winning strike-rate of 75% (won nine, lost three).
He again was one of the Tigers’ best, in last Saturday’s gripping final round victory over ladder leader Sydney, finishing with 25 disposals, including 13 contested possessions, eight clearances, and a crucial goal.
His strong, contested-ball style of play seems ideally suited to the pressure-cooker atmosphere of finals football, and he’s eagerly awaiting the chance to mix it with the Power on Sunday . . .
“It’s quite unbelievable, really. It probably hasn’t sunk it yet,” Miles said on SEN.
“I’ve probably got another couple of days for it to sink in, and then get to business.
“It’s been a pretty emotional roller-coaster for me, but to me potentially playing my first final this week, it’s a dream come true really . . .
“I know that the disappointments of last year (being beaten by Carlton in the elimination final), still burn pretty hard in the playing group at the moment.
“We’ve got back into a position to, hopefully, rectify that.
“We’re excited and can’t wait for the opportunity to travel together, and go over to Port.
“Our record’s been pretty good on the road, so just looking forward to it.”
