Richmond young gun Dustin Martin has revealed his on-field aspirations in an exclusive interview with Tiger great Matthew Richardson on ‘Roar Vision’.
Martin, who embraced the challenge of being used in a different role across half-back early this year, and has also been in damaging form up forward, is setting his sights firmly on developing into an A-grade midfielder.
“I want to become one of the elite midfielders of the competition,” Martin declared.
The talented 22-year-old is fully aware of what he has to do to achieve his goal.

“I’ve just got to play very good footy on a consistent basis, and be well-rounded – offense, defence, tackles, all that kind of stuff,” he said.
Martin also realises the importance of further building his fitness base, in order to consistently match it with the competition’s best midfielders.
“I think every year that you’re in the system, you keep getting fitter and fitter,” he said.
“Every little opportunity I get, I jump on the AlterG machine and try and get a few ‘k’s’ in the legs.”
The plan is for Martin to take on a more permanent midfield role now, with occasional explosive bursts up forward.
“I think I’m going to settle in the midfield, with a little bit of swapping forward,” he said.
“I’ll go down there for a rest, coming off on-ball.
“It’s always good to kick a goal . . . There’s nothing better than getting a good roar after you kick a goal, that’s for sure.
“I feel as though I can always be good for a few goals down there . . .”
As for the experiment of being used across half-back, Martin believes it was a valuable lesson in his overall football education.
“I enjoyed it. At least now, I know I can go back and play there if we need it,” he said.
“’Dimma’ (coach Damien Hardwick) likes us to play in a lot of different positions if we have to. So, knowing that, learning to defend a lot better definitely helps.”
